Early in the morning, waking up and having a cup of hot milk, every kid listens to his parents, relentless requests to read the newspaper. Just to get rid of the endless nudging, the kid pretends to read the paper. He opens the opens the newspaper and jumps right to the comic’s page. With the concentration of a doctor performing a major surgery, he reads each and every word. The welcoming fun filled calvin & hobbes, Archie or the action packed superheroes Spiderman, superman, comics have a way of reaching a child’s heart by capturing his vivid imagination. This goes on for a few years and the actual news that the newspaper provides remains untouched. One day, when the kid grows up, he realizes that the “GK” he acquired over the years is nil. He repents not reading the news and thinks “If only the news were as interesting as the comics!” Wait! They are, at Newzomics!
THE BRAINS BEHIND NEWS+COMICS – NEWZOMICS
An MBA graduate with work experience in the software field, Shipra, mother of a 7 year old is the ideator of Newzomics. She was joined by Tarun Agrawal and Vikrant, both MBA graduates who were very much taken by the concept of news presented through comics. Although they came up with the idea in December 2015, they took a few months to establish the way Newzomics reports news. There was initially a struggle to convert the idea into reality. What posed a problem was that they didn’t know the context of the news they wanted to report. They had to educate themselves with the concepts before going forward with the cartooning. CREATING CURIOSITY IN YOUNG MINDS
Newzomics posts its news on its website newzomics.com and also has an app on Google playstore. One look at the black board of the website, we just keep scrolling down. The news presented through colourful pictorials cleverly covers the story in a single conversation between characters that look very close to their real life forms. Although the details of the story are not given, the headline itself sticks in your mind. There is an ease of comprehensibility so much that, we can grasp the subject of the news in a few seconds and read almost 20 stories in about 5 minutes. The people at Newzomics consciously avoid news relating to violence and corruption keeping the news relevant enough for kids. They deal with various categories of news – business, education, international, national, local, energy, environment, society and technology. It is obvious that the short conversation feeds curiosity to the kids. They further feed their curiosity by actually researching into the news thus turning into knowledgeable and socially aware and responsible citizens.
DIGITAL POSTS TO PAPER PRINTS
