Samsung, Xiomi, Vivo retains top spots in Indian Smartphone Market

According to Canalys, India’s smartphone market grew 12% year on year in the first quarter of 2017. Over 27 million units have been shipped into the country of which Korean manufacturer, Samsung has continued its domination in the Indian market, followed by Chinese manufacturer Xiomi and Vivo.

During the quarter, a whopping number of 27 million smartphones were shipped across the country in the period Jan-Mar 2017. In which a little over a quarter, 26% of smartphones were sold by Samsung apart from facing a disastrous launch of Note 7, followed by Xiomi with 13% and Vivo sold 12%.

The reports are that in Samsung over the half of the smartphones which were sold belonged to J-Series and A-Series which come in Budget-smartphone segment. Whereas, for Xiomi got benefitted greatly from its model Redmi Note 4. The company has managed to sell over 10 lakh units of this smartphone alone.

Canalys explains, “The top three players now have markedly different channel strategies. Samsung maintained its market share, shipping just over 6 million units. Sustained J-series shipments to its established offline distribution partners ensured that it stayed on top. Xiaomi continued to grow in Q1 2017, accounting for 14 percent of shipments in the quarter, up from 3 percent a year ago, as it closes in on 4 million units. Third-placed Vivo surpassed the 10 per cent mark this quarter, with an impressive 36% growth in sequential shipments.”

The race was followed by Oppo in with 10%, Lenovo with 8% and Other with 31% of market shares. Apart from this, after facing immense failure at their launch, Motorola has made a comeback with their G-Series which were sold in heavy numbers among the Indian smartphone users.

eMarketer forecasts that demand for smartphones will remain strong, with the number of smartphone users in India growing from 267.1 million this year to 381.5 million by 2020.
